This goes back to many different themes we have discussed over the years, but the one it reminded me most of is the concept that culture is the cutting edge of society... and music culture is the very tip of that cutting edge. The way a society handles and treats its music is highly indicative of its priorities. In that regard, music is central to who we are in a manner which most people fail to recognise.
It's the living embodiment, for policy and politics, of Niemoller's 'First they came for the....'
I want to write more about this. It's not a new way of thinking, but I think we need to be clearer about what's happening and the role of the arts... A Kennedy Center post is on the way soon!
